چکیده
Abstract. This study analyses and quantifies the effects of vertical wind shear (VWS) on properties shallow cumulus cloud fields over Central Amazonia. We perform idealised simulations with high resolution (50 m horizontally 20 vertically) using Dutch Atmospheric Large-Eddy Simulation (DALES) model, changing initial conditions large-scale forcing VWS. The resulting field is analysed by applying a tracking algorithm to generate Lagrangian datasets life cycle individual clouds as well their time-varying core margin dimensions. reference run has no speed or directional represents typical day in local dry season. Numerical experiments moderate are simulated adding linear increases 1.2 2.4 s−1 km−1, respectively. Three additional runs made 90∘ rotation between surface top domain (5 km) three conditions. find that developing sheared environment have horizontal equivalent diameter increased up 100 average, but depth reduced. Our quantification shows VWS tends increase size cores reduces relative area, volume, mass fractions compared overall addition km−1 decreases area about 0.03 (about 10 % average) its volume ratios 0.05 (10 %–25 terms). Relevant for transport updraught liquid water content lower within cores, consequently so upward flux. All quantifications mean point inhibition convective strength VWS, therefore hampering shallow-to-deep transition. However, open questions still remain given individually deepest were under environmental shear, even though they occur small numbers. could indicate other indirect opposite development if found be significant future.

Composite Vertical Structure of Vertical Velocity in Nonprecipitating Cumulus Clouds
Vertical transects of Doppler vertical velocity data, obtained from an airborne profiling millimeter-wave cloud radar, are composited for a large number of cumulus clouds (Cu) at various stages of their life cycle, to examine typical circulations patterns. The Cu clouds range in depth between ;500 and 6000 m and are generally nonprecipitating. They were sampled on board the University of Wyomin...

A parameterization of shallow cumulus clouds for use in atmospheric general circulation models is proposed. The parameterization uses a bulk representation of an ensemble of transient clouds. Entrainment of environmental air occurs at the ascending top of the cumulus cloud and also at the lateral boundaries of the region below the top of the cloud. Complete detrainment of the air in the cloud o...
متن کاملTransport and chemical transformations influenced by shallow cumulus over land
The distribution and evolution of reactive species in a boundary layer characterized by the presence of shallow cumulus over land is studied by means of two largeeddy simulation models: the NCAR and WUR codes. The study focuses on two physical processes that can influence the chemistry: the enhancement of the vertical transport by the buoyant convection associated with cloud formation and the p...

The possibility of velocity shear-induced linear transformations of different magnetohydrodynamic waves in the solar wind is studied both analytically and numerically. A quantitative analysis of the wave transformation processes for all possible plasma-β regimes is performed. By applying the obtained criteria for effective wave coupling to the solar wind parameters, we show that velocity sheari...
